Italians Do It Better

I've been a fan of Benny Benassi for a long time; ever since his hit single Satisfaction came out in 2002. While going through my ipod play list i came across this song which left me speechless.

Summer Soulstice

Summer is a soulfull time. Trade the sweaty denim for the comfort of white linen. Toss the sneakers and slip on a pair of retro Sperry Top-sider boat shoes. Mornings start with espresso (not terrible coffee!?). Days off are spent with friends patio-side, sipping a Pinot Grigio (or a Sauvignon Blanc for all you PG haters) and late-night dinners over a bottle of Riserva Ducale.

During these months I am heavily influenced by Italian casual-chic, so I want to share a perfectly playable summer mixtape by a DJ with an Italian name.

DJ Ferrari isn't Italian, and he has a pretty lame name, but he can sure mix funk and soul records.

Lego Rings! (multi-finger)

It's all about the little flat control panel peices, that you stuck on spaceships in the cockpot, but realistically you could stick any Lego peice you want on the Lego Ring (here is the catalog). Pirate Ship gold peices, parrots, lego man heads, crazy vent peices, or just wear it bare. I'm stoked to get mine. More colours coming soon.

Check out this new songs they've just released titled Britney which is sure to make you get really hyper and dance your ass off.

Jules Andre - Brown + Terrible Coffee

Hi! I'm Jules Andre-Brown. Thanks for reading. I've just started contributing to this blog - here's a cool mix I did with my pal Marcus in London last month. We did it at the infamous Glenarmy Headquarters in London. Not only is home to where the radioclit parties started - it's also the best BBQ place in hackney. Anyway -- I hope you like it.

Cassetteboy

I discovered this really cool duo from the UK, called Cassetteboy. Their first appearance was on the Di and Dodi Do Die 7” Record which was released under the label record Barry's Bootlegs. As well they've produced two albums on their own, and have a appeared on an album with DJ Rubbish where they parody a song by Alanis Morrisette and also The Streets. Their musical approach is really different from any other musician out there. Most of the songs are constructed mainly from thousands and thousands of of audio snippets taken from TV, radio, film and popular music. The Parker Tapes which was their first full album release, which had a staggering 98 tracks was constructed using the the primitive process of manually splicing segments of audio together via a two-deck tape system. How many musicians out there still do that???

So, if you want to become like Cassetteboy all you need is:
  1. a tv
  2. a computer
  3. an audio out cable
  4. Sound Forge, Acid and Vegas
  5. loads of free time
  6. another computer because you're bound to break one
  7. patience, lots and lots of patience, plust a bit more patience if you can find it. You'll need it.
If i've they've caught your attention please check them out on their myspace.

Jason Lev

How many DJs do you know who refuse to play mp3s? How many DJs do you know who grew up on the east coast during the birth of house, booty and techno, sneaking into places with fake id just to hear the music? How many DJs do you know who put so much of themself into the craft that they can't play more than once or twice a week? Meet Jason Lev.

I will spare you from the international DJ flyer banter: he owns an edit label... he first cut his teeth... been collecting vinyl for over 15 years... blah blah blah.

Jason Lev is seriously the shit. Check out these mixes he made, called Sound of Gold.

I admit it, when I first heard "Sound of Gold 3", the first of his mixes that he gave me, I was like... wtf, where's the bangers? Where's the fidget electro? Haven't you heard of Bmore?? Cmon man get with it!! ! Then after a couple of listens.. i GOT it... it's SOUL! The enjoyment of these mixes is not in the form of bangers, exclusives, "genre-trashing", or fancy mixing.. it's just the most beautiful disco, funk and soul records that ever existed, mixed live and mastered professionally. These CDs are about 15$ each, and rightfully so, but lucky for you I have permission to post the mp3s right here, so go crazy.

Also peep his new mix, Sound of the Universe, which features more modern soul music.

Jason Lev is playing TOMORROW NIGHT at Fabric (66 Water St. Vancouver) for his birthday, so come support and wish the man a happy birthday! here's the facebook event page. He also is at the Shine back room every friday (364 Water Street).

the Tony-B rave machine

This is the best thing to use at a gig if you lose all your mp3s.

I've seen a few things like this before, but most of them were jokes. This one is really really well-made. Lots of fun

5 Bmore songs that don't have the "think" or "sing sing" loop

+

BALTIMORE CLUB?

A lot of haterz talk down Baltimore club music because it prominently features the "Think" break (boom chikachik-a-chikachik PA!) and the "Sing Sing" break (boom chssk cha chssk boom chssk cha chssk). However, baltimore club music actually uses many more different kinds of beats. While I love both of these breaks, I am on a mission to save the genre, so here are 5 great b-more tracks that are 100% "Think"/"Sing Sing" free.

Blaqstarr - Hands up Thumbs down

Rod Lee - Feel Me

D'Secret SVC - Tight Jeans (DJ Booman remix)

Curtis Vodka - Mary Jane 2000

KW Griff - Foot Stompin

new post - Foolish Felix mix

I've been getting ready to gear up for the new, multi-contributor blog. In the meantime I will share one of my favorite mixes.. if you have an hour to spare. First of all.. a few years ago my dad bought me a "how to dj" book for my birthday (F off.. i learned a thing or two.. so what) its actually the best book ever for that because the authors are the real deal.. they wrote the "Last Night A DJ Saved My Life" book, which is the definitive DJ history book, so they know what they're talking about. Anyway they have a website and they post mystery mixes up every month. This particular one struck a chord with me because it's one of those spacey disco mixes -- which is awesome -- but get this.. its not boring! It really is a varied mix that takes you on a crazy journey.. you won't know any of the songs but you won't even care. This is one of those mixes that is easily greater than the sum of its parts. It's pretty out there, but give it a go.

Turns out his name is Felix Dickenson. Here's his myspace:

homework

Did Diplo first discover baltimore club music as an elementary school teacher from kids in internet class looking at baltimoreclubtracks.com all day in Philly? Find out here!

Who is the rock band that is apparently the next Mad Decent band? this interview is from a year ago, so maybe its not even happening, but i still feel hella out of the loop.. anyone?

This is the mix that started it all. These are probably the first baltimore club songs that anyone outside the city ever heard. From 2003, so excuse the obvious tracks.

Skitzo Dancer

It’s just before midnight and a long line of clubbers waits patiently outside
Someone is yelling something like “strike up the tune”...

So you think you’ve seen and heard it all
But I’m a skitzo escaped from the hospital
I’m a club vandal a renegade
Who am I ? You ask but don’t really care
I just came here to put my mind at ease
‘cause music is better than popPin’ pills

Skitzo dancer / Skitzo dancer / Skitzo dancer / Skitzo... /

There’s a battle on the dance floor
Can the crowd dance fast enough ?
There’s a battle on the dance floor
Can the crowd dance fast enough ?

No need for a straight jacket!
I’m like Billy Elliot and this is my ballet
No need to reveal my identity
‘cause I got so many split personalities
Homophobic can’t help laughing at me
So I will get into the pit and break some teeth
I’m not afraid to be different
And if ever I need to fight, I’m self confident

Skitzo dancer / Skitzo dancer / Skitzo dancer / Skitzo... /

There’s a battle on the dance floor
Can the crowd dance fast enough?
There’s a battle on the dance floor
Can the crowd dance fast enough?

It’s a riot! Riot! Who is (say "cool-ish") the dj today ?
Give me something to dance to
And please no techno
‘cause it’s war in my head and I’m ready to disco

You like the way I dance I can show you some steps
It's all about the freeze
'cause my disease gives me the skills
And as soon as you'll be mixing I'll be party rocking
'cause I'm a skitzo it's not a macho thing

There’s a battle on the dance floor
Can the crowd dance fast enough?
There’s a battle on the dance floor
Can the crowd dance fast enough?

He's under the spotlights and he looks savage.

He's a skitzo dancer. Skitzo boogie...

Skitzo dancer / Skitzo dancer / Skitzo dancer / Skitzo... /

I'm just guilty of dancing alone
Dancing dancing alone...

Thugged Out! #1

So I was working on a big complicated Ableton mix but I realized I don't really have the production skills to pull off what I wanted.. and then I thought, why spend all that time on a dumb DJ mix anyway? Why aren't I working on a frickin album or something??

I will finish it eventually, but for right now I decided to start posting live mixes on a frequent basis. So here is the debut of a series called Thugged Out!. It's just going to be a semi-casual half hour selection of new/old groovy songs that I'm feeling.
